At the hotel, Miss Mallard learned that Philip Merganser had just gone home by sleigh taxi.

“Poor fellow!” said the hotel’s manager. “He checked in yesterday afternoon, just before the storm, with a broken leg. He stayed in his room the whole time with a ‘do not disturb’ sign on his door.”

The manager added, “He left his skis here. I imagine he won’t need them for quite a while because of his broken leg.”

“I’ll take them,” said Miss Mallard. “I’m returning now to the Mergansers’ house.”
